Which colors go well with the decor? The answer is here!

2025 Do you find it difficult to combine colors in the interior or is it not as perfect as it could be? We show you the way!

Home is where you can truly express yourself. You can decorate your home however you want with colors, styles, and textures. Different colors create different moods and emotions. For example, red emphasizes power, white creates purity, and black gives privacy.

Furniture can also be decorated according to your taste. You can choose to cover your sofa with colorful pillows to make it look extra cute and comfortable. Alternatively, you can choose to keep your furniture simple so that you can easily change the look of your home without needing new furniture.

Color Selection
A basic understanding of color can be a good starting point when decorating.

Color composition in the house

What the perfect color combination is naturally depends on taste and what trends are currently prevailing.

However, a basic understanding of the interaction of colors, how we perceive them and how they affect the psyche can be a good starting point for combining colors in the interior.

Understand the color wheel

The basis of all colors are the three primary colors: red, yellow and blue.

These three colors can be mixed together to make any color imaginable. If you add black or white to a color, the quality of the color can be adjusted – that is, how dark or light the color should be. White and black also determine how “saturated” the color is. The more black or white in a color, the less saturated it is.

If you mix the three primary colors two by two, you get the secondary colors on the color wheel: purple, orange, and green.

All other colors and shades beyond the six primary and secondary colors are called tertiary colors.

When decorating a room, it's a good idea to know where colors stand on the color wheel and specifically how they work with and against each other. In many ways, it functions as a kind of color scheme.

Highlight using colors

Complementary colors are placed on top of each other in a circle. This is useful information if you want to emphasize something in your decor – colors can actually be used to emphasize things. This is because complementary colors emphasize and highlight each other.

For example, if you have chosen blue for the walls and you really want to emphasize it to make the walls look more vibrant, it is obvious to use orange tones in the decoration in line with the color wheel. Orange is the complementary contrast of blue, as it is called in technical language in a very beautiful way.

Orange will therefore give the blue color a new dimension and at the same time harmoniously emphasize what orange is.

Red and green, as well as yellow and purple, have the same effect as blue and orange, but it is worth noting that in the interaction between colors, the brightness of the colors is of great importance in terms of how much of the complementary color should be used, allowing the two to reach a harmonious expression.

Dark blue has little brightness, and if you add a fresh orange, you don't need much to make either color come alive.

While red and green have roughly the same “strength,” purple and yellow are the two colors with the greatest contrast in strength. Therefore, as seen below, not much yellow is needed to give life and contrast to larger purple surfaces. Small brass details contrast with purple chairs and mauve walls.

Learn how to create a color palette for room decoration

A completely empty room to decorate is a dream for some and an unmanageable nightmare for others. Because where to start? How do you achieve a harmonious and beautiful expression when choosing colors?

A good tip you can use is to choose three dominant colors that you want to focus on.

Choose two that don't contrast with each other on the color wheel, but are fairly close together. An example is dark green and dusty gray-green. Black, white, or gray also stand out.

A single colour should be a broad base, used for example on walls, carpets or curtains, and should be present in about 60% of the interior.

The second color is 30 percent of the interior and, as mentioned, is close to the main color on the color wheel. The last and third color should provide contrast and life and therefore should be used in about 10% of the interior. This color should be located on the opposite side of the circle and therefore forms the complementary contrast.

Example:
The most dominant color in this bedroom is navy blue. White color contributes approximately 30 percent and brown-red color helps to enliven and makes up 10 percent.

Black Wall

As mentioned, there are an infinite number of shades of the six primary and secondary colors, so the above “rule” does not only apply when you use one of the six colors, but it can also apply to all shades. Of course, it is possible to mix many other color lines into the decor.

But if you're starting from scratch, on the other hand, it's a good idea to think in terms of the three primary colors and use them as guides for choice and non-choice.

Don't forget the light when choosing colors

When you choose how dark or light the colors will be, it's wise to consider how much light there is in the room you'll be decorating.

When considering color choices, you should also consider what time of day and what purpose the room will be used for. Dark colors may be fine in a bedroom, but they are less noticeable in a home office where you tend to sit in the evenings without much natural light.
