What are the types of conversions?
Italian masters create transforming tables in a variety of designs, offering both traditional folding options and complex mechanisms that unexpectedly change the shape and size of the table. What are the advantages of each?
Italian tables
The most common transformation mechanism is slip. There are several types:
- The side sections extend from the ends;
- The table halves are separated and the middle section of the table top moves upwards;
- Additional sections are expanded using a rotating mechanism.

Folding tables
Folding tables-books, or as they are also called “butterflies”, expand due to the folding side sections.
The main disadvantage of such models: folding, side “wings” make it impossible to sit at the table.
Individual folding tables of non-standard design can be fully used when folded, but this is an exception.

Transforming tables can not only “grow” in length and width, but also change their purpose. A console table that turns into a dining table for 12 people or a dining table that can be hung on the wall and used as a mirror – not a fantasy, but quite real models. However, such tables are rare. Most of the “dual-use” transformable tables are coffee tables or side tables that turn into a dining table.
Things you need to remember
In addition to the obvious advantages, transforming tables also have their drawbacks. In most cases, their countertops are larger and their price is higher than that of monolithic models. In addition, design features impose some restrictions on the shape of the countertop and base.
What's better?
Tables with a foldable top look stylish and fit perfectly into modern living spaces. They can be used both compactly and unfolded. The price to pay for these qualities is a high price, which largely consists of the cost of technological equipment.
Most folding tables can only be used when folded. However, they are much more compact than extendable tables when stowed. Their main disadvantage is that the folding table needs to be stored somewhere when not in use.
A folding table that turns into a compact console is the best option for home celebrations in a country house.
When to buy a transformation table?
A folding or extendable dining table will help you understand if you are short of space or want to host many guests at home.
If the issue of free space or number of seats is not acute, it is better to opt for a stationary model – it will be lighter, more elegant and, most likely, cheaper.
