Sofa – oriental guests in a European interior

Both the sofa and the couch are unusual elements for the European interior. The former was brought to the Old World from the Ottoman Empire, the latter from Persia.

These sofas are united not only by their eastern origin, but also by their purpose – a good rest during the day. And what is the difference between them?

In the classic version couch – a large sofa with backrests and armrests of the same height. In the modern, Europeanized version, the armrests of the sofa may be lower than the backrest or even absent.

And here blackboard In the traditional sense, it is a wide, low armchair without a back. However, in a modern interpretation, it may have a low back and armrests on one or both sides.

Therefore, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish these types of living room sofas.

An aristocrat among the couches

The sofa came into fashion during the reign of Louis XV. The sofa initially resembled an eight-legged bed and had no headboard. Later its shape changed – the back appeared and half of the legs disappeared.

In a private setting, the sofa is an item for sitting in a comfortable position, slightly bent and without fully stretching the legs.

There is a separate type of sofa – recliner. It is easy to recognize thanks to the high armrests of a special shape, which eventually merge with the back.
You can sit in the river leaning on its side – in this case, their shape repeats the bends of the body.

Is the chaise longue the same as the sofa?

No. Unlike the sofa, it is customary not to lie down on the chaise longue, but only to sit, slightly leaning on the armrest.

Goat is literally translated as causal – “light conversation”, which fully corresponds to the purpose of this topic.
How do you recognize it? A chaise longue is a cross between a sofa and a bench. The first has a back, the bench does not, and the chaise longue is a “shortened” form.

In the classic version, the chaise longue is divided into two by a recess in the back. This is explained historically – this piece of furniture was created as a special sofa for two. On it, lovers could talk, while emphasizing their small distance from each other.

What other sofas are there?

There are so many types of sofas for the living room that it is impossible to fit an overview of all the options in a single article. In the next article, we will talk about the lesser-known members of the large family of sofas: paté, desados, ottoman, vis-a-vis and confidian, chaise longue and banquette.
