Ways to Tidy Up Your Home Quickly!

The Mess Project 2025

When you return home after a busy day, wouldn't you like to relax in a comfortable and tidy environment? Now, quickly tidying up your home will allow you to immediately relieve the fatigue of a stressful day.

We offer effective and practical tips for quickly tidying up your home. As a first step, create an organized storage system to minimize clutter in your rooms. Storage solutions such as shelves, baskets or boxes help you organize your belongings easily.

A messy home can actually depress residents. In fact, research shows that:

  1. People living in extremely cluttered homes are 77% more likely to be overweight.
  2. For people with hoarding tendencies, throwing objects can cause actual pain in areas of the brain associated with physical pain, according to a Yale University study.
  3. A messy home environment negatively impacts our perception of our home and, consequently, our satisfaction with life.

Frankly, getting involved in decluttering projects from time to time is good for your mental, physical, and emotional health. Let’s take a look at some of the easiest decluttering projects you can take on without a breakdown!

Project 1: Start with the Kitchen Countertop

When it comes to decluttering projects, you can start small. Take your kitchen counter, for example. Nine times out of ten, something will probably go wrong. It might even be a little disorganized. So stop viewing your kitchen as a dumping ground for all sorts of miscellaneous items and make sure to declutter your counter every day, preferably at the end of the day, so you can start the next day on a fresh note.

Project 2: Clear Unnecessary Items from Your Bedside Table

We all want to crash in our beds when the night comes. But if you could just take an extra five minutes to clear away all the clutter on people’s bedside tables. Extending one arm while you sleep can cause you to knock down a glass or trip over an annoying coaster, waking you up in the middle of the night.

So, clear the clutter from your bedside table before you go to sleep. Keep only the essentials like your water bottle, your medications, your phone, and maybe your alarm clock. Trust us when we say that a clean and tidy bedside table will help you wake up less stressed in the morning.

Project 3: Clean Up One Bookshelf at a Time

If you have a home library in multiple spots in your home, it’s a keeper. Instead of clearing out all the shelves with the hundreds of books you have, tackle one bookshelf at a time. You won’t get overwhelmed and you’ll be able to sort the books neatly.

Project 4: Tackle Your Wardrobe One Drawer at a Time

Follow the same rule with your wardrobe as with bookshelves. If you are short on time, clean and organize one shelf at a time. Take a look at the picture above. It is a perfect example of a before and after wardrobe cleaning session. Cleaning is a time-consuming task. You need to organize and remove items that you no longer need. This requires some thought and remembering. So, make sure you tackle your wardrobe cleaning one shelf at a time.

Project 5: Organize Your Kitchen Utensils and Pantry

The next area that needs your attention is the kitchen pantry. You can start by organizing and labeling the food items in your kitchen.

Create special areas for herbs, spices, and other kitchen products. When organizing your pantry, don’t forget to clear out under-the-sink kitchenware. This area often goes unnoticed. Divide items into three sections: cleaning products, plastic bags, and mixed tools, and move from there.

Project 6: Clean Out Your Child's Closet

If you have kids, you understand the importance of regular cleaning and maintenance. Since little ones grow their clothes at lightning speed, keeping their closets organized is absolutely essential.

Take out the clothes they’ve outgrown and store them in a box marked “donate.” You can also recycle clothing. As a best practice, adopt a minimal approach and keep only essential items at arm’s length.

Project 7: Clean Your Desk

Considering the sharp increase in the number of people working from home, it is very important to organize your home desk from time to time.

If you don't want your productivity levels to drop, make sure you put all your important papers in a file, shred and recycle unnecessary documents, retest the pens in your stationery cup and clear out the drawers of any unnecessary junk you may be harboring.

Project 8: Clean Out Your Child's Toy Chest

One of the most dreaded rooms for a cleaning session is your kids’ playroom. We get it. It’s constantly messy and disorganized. To avoid losing your mind over this messy organization, clean the toy room while your child is at school. It will be faster and more efficient when your kids are not around.

Project 9: Dig Through Your Linen Closet

Everyone loves investing in sheets. Plus, every season calls for a different bedding setup. So, you need to organize your linen closet every now and then.

Make sure to fold the linens neatly and place them in the black metal baskets as shown above. This type of Scandinavian style storage design works well with any home decor.

A clutter-free space is a strong indicator of mental, physical, and emotional health. So take the time to tackle shorter organizing projects and breathe new life into your home. Head over to the HomeLane blog for more ideas and tips on decluttering projects that can be a lifesaver.
