Choosing a mattress: what's important?

Which design is best?

Italian beds can be divided into two main types:

  • On high legs and a thin pedestal under the bed,
  • On high, covered ground.

The first option is visually lighter and makes it easier to keep the bottom of the bed clean. Models with a high base do not have this, but their internal space is usually available for storing linens, household linens or rarely used things.

Leg beds are good when you don’t want to “load” the interior. Boxed models will help out if there is a shortage of storage space.

Frame – solid wood, MDF or metal?

MDF beds have a good balance of price and quality. A bed made of MDF or a combination of MDF plus wood is an excellent option for a modern interior.

Solid wood beds usually belong to the luxury segment and are made in different styles: classical, baroque, eco, country.

Beds on a wrought-iron frame are often chosen by adherents of the traditional style. However, such models are sometimes found in modern interiors filled with various objects.

The foundation of the foundations

The base is an element on which the comfort of the bed largely depends. There are many options here. From the classic orthopedic base with lamellae to exotic solutions such as felt strips.

“Mobile” beds

They are also called “variable geometry beds”. These are models in which the base can change shape together with the mattress: You can lift the headboard and bend the base “at the knees”. These beds are especially comfortable for those who like to read. You don’t even have to stand up to change the inclination – just press a button and the electric drive will adjust the base to the desired position.

The whole head

If the base is responsible for the comfort of the bed, then the headboard is responsible for its design. An interesting headboard will make the bed the central element of the bedroom, make it concise – it will help maintain the balance of shapes and colors in a minimalist environment.

A headboard can be not only beautiful, but also functional. Consider models with built-in cabinets or shelves in the headboard.

One bed – several headboards

One of the factories that apply this principle is Christopher Guy.

What does this modular approach offer? First, the possibility of changing the headboard if for some reason the old one does not suit you. Second, the ability to choose the base and headboard separately gives you more freedom to choose the bed that suits you perfectly.

Finishing

Any Italian bed can be purchased with a variety of finishes. For models in the middle price segment, a variety of options for leather and textiles are usually offered from the main upholstery catalog of the factory. If we are talking about the luxury segment, then any options are possible here: exclusive textiles, rare types of leather, hand embroidery and decorative elements. This usually uses textiles from the supplier or provided by the customer.

While leather beds look more solid, expensive and respectable, textile beds are perceived as more comfortable and relaxing.
