Voltaire's chair: the modern face of a legend

The famous Voltaire chair has nothing to do with the famous thinker. Just the legendary model appeared in Russia at a time when Voltaire's ideas were especially popular. The name stuck, and the chair itself has survived to this day.
What can you choose from a variety of “eared” chairs today?

A high-backed armchair with “ears” was first made in England in the 17th century. The model was originally designed for the elderly. The high back protected from drafts, and if you put the armchair next to the fireplace, it helped keep warm. The Voltaire chair quickly became popular and remains in demand today.

A chair with a high “eared” back has many names: “grandfather's chair”, “wing chair”, “chimney chair”, “English chair”. There are also a lot of configurations. Among the assortment of Italian factories it is easy to find both a copy of an old model and a modern design interpretation.

Classic English armchairs

Despite the fact that draft protection is no longer needed, the Grandfather chair in its original form has not lost its relevance today. An armchair with a high back and “ears” has become a kind of symbol of comfort, peace and coziness in the house. Today, many Italian factories produce classic Voltaire armchairs, externally identical to historical models, but comfortable and practical in a modern way.

Modern interpretations of the Voltaire chair

If the living room is decorated in a modern style, this is not a reason to refuse to purchase a Voltaire armchair. Current models have “got rid” of carved legs, furniture upholstery and other traditional details, but have retained the main features: a high back of a characteristic shape, comfortable depth and comfortable armrests.

“Eared” design seats

Iconic furniture models are often a source of inspiration for contemporary designers. Voltaire's armchair is no exception. Its features are sometimes guessed in many models – the most fantastic ones.
