Painting walls in the interior: types, design, combinations, how to choose colors?
Decorative painting is a replacement for traditional wallpaper. Paint is cheaper, can be changed color at any time and washed. But before that, it is recommended to do some research and figure out which paint to choose and how to paint the walls in the room.

Features of painting walls from different materials

You can’t paint both wood and concrete with one paint. They absorb and “stick” to the surface in different ways. Special wall treatment is also required. So, here’s a small list of materials and types of paint.

Year

Painting a wooden wall is not a great idea. Paint hides the natural texture, which is the purpose of wood!

It is more correct to use special types of pigment stains. They are based on water or alkyd resins. They emphasize the texture, rather than hide it, making it more visible and bright. True, at the same time, all the disadvantages of the finishing process are highlighted.

If you still need to paint the wooden walls in the room instead of wallpaper, it is better to take water-based formulations. They breathe and do not disrupt natural air circulation.

Brick

Usually the brick is not primed, it is just thoroughly washed with water. It is necessary to remove all the dirt and let the wall dry for about a week.

If it is sufficiently cleaned, the paint can be applied directly to the brick. They mainly use acrylic-based interior paint. The seam can be painted a different color to avoid losing the brick texture.

Concrete

Unlike bricks, concrete is always porous. It absorbs paint in large quantities, which increases its consumption by one and a half to two times. In addition, it gradually peels off, which worsens the painting.

The problem is easily solved – with a primer. Even the cheapest acrylic-based compound fills the pores and prepares the surface.

How to paint walls in an apartment instead of wallpaper? As with brickwork, any interior paint will do.

Wallpaper

Often the walls in the interior are pasted over with wallpaper for painting. They are ideally prepared for painting, withstand an even tone.

In this case no preparation is required. The paint is simply applied with a roller on top.

Plasterboard

Because plasterboard is flexible, the paint needs to be flexible. Ideal: high-quality latex and silicone formulations.

When preparing the walls for painting, you should:

strengthen joints;
plaster them;
prepare the surface.

Plaster

For painting walls on plaster in an apartment, only a deep penetration primer is needed. It will glue the dusty surface and prevent the paint from slipping ahead of time.

Painted walls in the interior are not a pragmatic solution. You can make the room much more interesting by using simple design techniques.

Highlight the wall

The long-standing trend of highlighting a wall is still popular today. It comes in 2 types:

paint colors for accent walls are contrastingly different from the rest;
The colors are harmonious, but different in saturation.

With the right combination you can get an interesting combination. The most important is the complementary combination, that is, contrasting colors on the circle.

Painting with two different colors

This type of wall painting idea is relevant for small rooms that need to be expanded. The secret is to paint the corners and isolated areas in a light color that contrasts with the dark furniture.

Gradient ve ombre

An interesting method of painting that allows you to visually make the room taller. For gradient painting, 2 colors are used. The transition goes from bottom to top. The effect is achieved as follows:

A thick layer of paint is applied below.
The paint needs to be “applied” with a dry roller until it hardens.
You should try to make the transition uniform.

Using a textured roller or sponge

Perhaps the easiest way to make a great design. To do this, just buy a textured roller from a hardware store. There are several relief options:

birds;
abstraction;
brick;
geometric shapes etc.

It is possible to paint the walls unusually with a normal dish sponge. Since it has a porous structure, the drawing will be interesting. You can use a washcloth instead of a sponge.

Under the brick

There are 3 ways to imitate a brick (excluding a textured roller):

1 Paint each brick with a thin brush. Be careful not to “fill the walls.” Usually, in this case, do not shade the center, just create contours.

2 Make a stencil from tape. In this case, a tape mesh is applied to the wall in the form of bricks. The gaps are painted with any paint.

3 Foam stencil. To do this, you need foam rubber, which is dipped in paint and applied to the wall.

Patterns and ornaments

A great option for kids’ rooms. A repeating ornament or abstraction is subtle, refreshing, and easy to create. All you need is a textured roller or just a can of paint and a brush.

What color to paint the walls – the child can decide for himself. Moreover, it can take part in the decor!

Highlighting some interior details

This method is used when you need to create an accent. If the background is white, any bright color will do.

Striped design

It is used primarily in thematic design. For example, in a nautical theme where stripes are referred to as traditional sailor clothing. In this case, use guides such as tape or masking tape.
