Things to do before moving into your new home

Congratulations on purchasing your new home! You’re probably itching to move, but before you do, there are a few things you can do before you move into your new home. It’ll be much easier if you do these things before you, your family, and your entire family do. Let’s take a look at some of the top things you should do before you call the movers.

6 things you need to do before moving into your new home

1. Throw and destroy

When people move, they leave behind things they no longer want, and so they don't want to go to the effort of adding to their removal load. After the previous owners move out and before you move in, visit your new home and take some time to go over everything that was left behind. You'll probably want to get rid of most of it, but you may find one or two things you want to keep, like potted plants.

Once you have your new home down to its foundations, it is time to do an extermination exercise. Lurking in the shadows of all the nooks, crannies and crevices of your new home are pests of all kinds. When no one has moved into your new home yet pesticide It’s best to apply it. You can call in professional insect killers or make your own. There are a variety of foggers (also known as “bug bombs”) and other products available that can help rid your new home of unwanted guests.

2. Scrub and clean

The best opportunity you’ll get to give your home a thorough scrubbing and cleaning is before you move in. So put on those gloves, treat it like spring, and scrub like your life depends on it! Without furniture, appliances, and decor, you can easily get to those hard-to-reach places that need cleaning. Carpet shampooing is definitely easier without having to manually move furniture and drapes.

Don't forget to use sugar soap on all walls. Sugar soap is a gentle yet powerful alkaline cleaner for general purpose cleaning, including all painted surfaces. You'll be amazed at how dirty wall surfaces can get over time. Do this whether you plan on painting your walls or not.

3. Correct and change

Before you move in is a great time to fix and change things. If you plan on painting the walls of your new home, do your best to patch up any cracks before applying any coats. Give yourself some time to go over the cracks with crack filler, dry and sand the area before painting.

If you plan to replace flooring in certain areas of your new home, do it now. The same goes for broken windows, ceilings, and light switches.

4. Paint and varnish

Paint fumes can be overwhelming, so why not consider painting your new home before you move in? That way, your walls will look shiny new, the paint will be dry and the smell will be gone by the time you move in. It’s also much easier to paint without any obstacles.

In addition to the walls of your new home, you should also take the opportunity to paint the window sills and ceilings. If your new home has wooden doors or window frames, it is also best to give them a fresh coat or two of varnish before moving in. Ideally, everything should be dry before moving in.

5. Open and check

You don’t want to move into your new home only to find that none of the lights or sockets work. Turn all the lights on before you move in, as you may need to replace any bulbs that have burned out. It’s also important to check all plug points to make sure they work and are safe to use. Please don’t burn down your new home!

6. Replace the keys

Now that your new home looks brand new, the old owners may want to move back in! Not really, but it's always safest to change all the keys in your new home and make copies for all members of your household as needed.
