The first days with your carpet: a user guide

The rug of your dreams has finally arrived at your doorstep! Once you receive your order, it’s natural to happily unpack and immediately place the rug in its place to see the results. But before you get too caught up in the excitement of unboxing, take a moment and read on!

In this quick guide to carpeting, you’ll learn a few tips to make sure your carpet’s first few days are as smooth and pleasant as possible. Here’s the secret to laying your carpet, getting rid of any bad habits, taking the vacuum cleaner on its first trip, and much more!

Step 1. Unpacking.

Installing the carpet does not require great complications, but we must follow a series of steps to eliminate curls and wrinkles and help the fibers to revitalize:

Unpack the rug as soon as possible. If there are any curls or wrinkles, gently twist them in the opposite direction to remove them. Place a stack of books over the areas that need smoothing and leave for 24 hours.

Because of the vice involved in storing it rolled up, you may also need to fold the rug with the surface facing out, so it is rolled upside down, eliminating further tension.

Normally, it may take up to a week for the carpet to lift the tension or vice. It depends on the composition and type of fiber, it even needs to get used to the humidity of the environment. So it may even give or expand a few centimeters.

Place your rug wherever you want. We recommend placing a non-slip mesh or felt pad under your rug to protect your floor (especially if the floor is natural wood), to give your feet a little more cushion and help prevent slips and falls.

Step 2: Vacuum.

It is normal for short or long pile carpets made of wool or synthetic fibers to shed some fibers during the first few days. This phenomenon is known as shedding and will decrease over time.

This is a normal process in wool fiber carpets due to the characteristics of their own yarn. The yarn, which consists of wool yarns of limited length, some are not completely knotted at the base of the carpet. Therefore, they give way and fall or form these fluff. This process is normal in the first weeks or even a few months when the carpet is first used. But do not worry, as time passes and with use, the fluff will stop and the carpet will continue to look like new.

In synthetic fiber rugs, this phenomenon usually does not occur, as the strands of yarn are longer and practically all of them are knotted at the base of the rug.

To help control lint cleaning and preserve the beauty of your carpet:

carefully vacuumMake sure you use a vacuum that allows you to lift the brush so you don't create too much friction on the pile surface – it can damage the fibers or pull them out of the carpet backing.

Pulling the thread. If loose fibers are sticking out from the surface of the carpet, this may be the case. Do not pull on these fibers as this may loosen a knot, finish, etc. Instead, use a sharp pair of scissors to trim the loose fibers back to the surface of the carpet. Run your hand over the surface of the carpet to gently catch any other loose fibers (if any) to cut them back.

Step 3: Ventilation.

Carpets can smell a little when they are first opened. In very humid environments, this potential odor is most noticeable.

This is a normal process due to the manufacturing process and the smell should dissipate within a few days. If necessary, air your carpet outdoors or in a well-ventilated room. Once aired out, the smell will never appear again.

We hope you love your new carpet. Have fun! Be sure to check out our carpet cleaning guide.
